Vasectomy
What is a vasectomy?
Vasectomy is a safe and effective permanent contraceptive method for men.
The “no-scalpel” method means the procedure is performed through a small puncture without a traditional incision. This allows faster recovery and less discomfort.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and you remain awake the entire time.
How is the procedure performed?
- Local anesthesia is applied to the scrotum.
- Once the area is numb, a small puncture is made in the skin.
- The vas deferens are located, sealed, and divided.
- Sutures are often not needed.
The whole procedure usually takes about 30–40 minutes.
You will not feel pain, but you may feel mild pressure or pulling.
What is important to know before the procedure?
Vasectomy is a permanent contraceptive method.
The procedure does not affect:
- erection
- sexual performance
- testosterone levels
- orgasm sensation
Before the procedure, the permanence of your decision will be discussed with the doctor.
Inform the doctor if you use blood thinners or have chronic diseases.
On the day of the procedure, perform normal hygiene washing.
Supportive underwear is recommended.
It is important to know that the contraceptive effect is not immediate.
What happens after the procedure?
After vasectomy, you may experience:
- Mild pain or tenderness
- Swelling or a small bruise
- Discomfort for 2–5 days
Most men can return to normal activities within 1–2 days.
What to do after the procedure?
- Rest on the first day.
- Keep the area clean and dry.
- Use pain relief recommended by the doctor if needed.
- Avoid heavy physical activity for about 1 week.
Sexual activity may be resumed after the wound has healed and sutures have dissolved, but additional contraception must be used at first.
Important
Vasectomy does not provide immediate contraceptive protection. Sperm may remain in the semen for some time.
About 3 months after the procedure, a control test (semen analysis) is performed to confirm the success of the procedure.
Until the doctor confirms that no sperm are present, another contraceptive method must be used.
