Transrectal prostate ultrasound (TRUS)

What is a transrectal prostate ultrasound (TRUS)?

Transrectal prostate ultrasound, or TRUS (transrectal ultrasound), is an accurate and safe examination used to assess the size, structure, and possible changes in the prostate.

The examination helps determine the cause of urinary problems, elevated PSA, pain, or other prostate-related complaints.

The procedure is short and usually well tolerated.

How is the examination performed?

  • The examination is performed in a lying position.
  • A thin ultrasound probe is inserted into the rectum, covered with a protective sheath and lubricant.
  • The probe transmits sound waves that create a detailed image of the prostate.

The examination usually takes 5–10 minutes.

It is not a painful procedure, but it may cause a mild feeling of pressure.

What is important to know before the examination?

Usually, fasting is not required.

Inform your doctor if you have:

  • rectal diseases
  • hemorrhoids in the acute phase
  • recent surgery in the rectal area

If the examination is performed together with a biopsy, you will receive separate detailed instructions.

What sensations may occur during the examination?

  • Mild pressure or fullness sensation
  • Short-term discomfort when inserting the probe

Most patients describe the examination as uncomfortable but not painful.

What to expect after the examination?

If only ultrasound is performed (without biopsy):

  • You may continue normal activities immediately
  • No recovery time is needed
  • No restrictions are required

If a biopsy is performed during the examination, the doctor will give separate instructions.

Why is transrectal prostate ultrasound important?

The examination helps evaluate:

  • prostate enlargement
  • nodular changes
  • signs of inflammation
  • causes of elevated PSA

Early detection allows appropriate treatment to be started in time.

Our goal is to ensure that you feel calm and well informed during the examination. If you have questions or concerns, we always explain the procedure thoroughly before starting.
