Frenuloplasty

What is frenuloplasty?

Frenuloplasty is a minor surgical procedure intended to correct a short or tight penile frenulum.

A short frenulum may cause pain during erection, discomfort during sexual intercourse, or repeated tearing and bleeding.

The procedure is short, performed under local anesthesia, and is generally well tolerated.

How is the procedure performed?

  • Local anesthesia is applied to the area.
  • Within a few minutes the area becomes numb.
  • The doctor releases and lengthens the frenulum with a small incision.
  • The wound is closed with dissolvable sutures.

The procedure usually takes 20–30 minutes.

You remain awake during the procedure, but you should not feel pain.

What is important to know before the procedure?

Usually no special preparation is required.

Inform your doctor if:

  • you are taking blood thinners
  • you have chronic diseases
  • you have allergies

On the day of the procedure, perform normal hygiene washing.

The doctor will explain all steps before the procedure and answer your questions.

What sensations may occur after the procedure?

After the anesthesia wears off, you may experience:

  • Mild to moderate pain
  • Swelling and tenderness
  • Minor bleeding during the first days
  • Discomfort during erection during the healing period

These symptoms are normal and usually resolve within a few days to a couple of weeks.

What to do after the procedure?

  • Keep the area clean and dry.
  • Follow the wound care instructions given by the doctor.
  • Wear comfortable underwear that does not cause pressure.
  • Avoid heavy physical activity for about 1–2 weeks.
  • Avoid sexual intercourse for about 3–4 weeks or according to the doctor’s recommendation.

Pain relief medication recommended by the doctor may be used if needed.
