Cystoscopy

What is cystoscopy?

Cystoscopy is a safe and modern procedure in which the doctor examines the inside of the bladder using a thin flexible fiber-optic camera.

The examination helps determine the exact cause of complaints such as frequent urination, pain, blood in the urine, recurrent infections, or other urinary symptoms.

The procedure is short and usually well tolerated.

How is the procedure performed?

The examination is performed using a special thin flexible instrument (cystoscope) with a small camera at the tip.

Before the procedure, a numbing gel may be used to reduce discomfort.

The whole examination usually takes 5–10 minutes.

What is important to know before the procedure?

Usually no special preparation is needed.

You may eat and drink normally (unless the doctor has advised otherwise).

Inform your doctor if you have:

  • allergies
  • a bleeding disorder
  • are taking blood thinners
  • an acute urinary tract infection

If necessary, a urine test will be done before the procedure.

If you have questions or feel anxious, tell the doctor — we will explain everything step by step.

What sensations may occur during the procedure?

  • Mild pressure or stinging sensation
  • Temporary discomfort when urinating
  • Strong urge to urinate during the examination

Most patients describe the procedure as uncomfortable but not painful.

What to expect after the procedure?

After cystoscopy, you may experience:

  • Mild burning or stinging during urination for 1–2 days
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • A small amount of blood in the urine

These symptoms are usually temporary and disappear on their own.

After the procedure:

  • Drink more water (unless the doctor has advised otherwise)
  • Avoid heavy physical activity on the same day
  • Monitor how you feel

When should you contact a doctor?
