Circumcision
What is circumcision?
Circumcision is a minor surgical procedure in which the foreskin of the penis is removed.
The operation is performed for medical reasons (for example recurrent inflammation or foreskin narrowing — phimosis).
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is generally well tolerated.
How is the operation performed?
- Local anesthesia is given by injection before the procedure.
- Within a few minutes the area becomes numb.
- The doctor then removes the foreskin.
- The wound is closed with dissolvable sutures.
- A comfortable dressing is applied.
The operation usually takes 30–60 minutes.
You remain awake during the procedure, but you should not feel pain.
What is important to know before the operation?
Blood tests may be ordered before the operation if needed.
Inform your doctor if:
- you are taking blood thinners
- you have chronic diseases
- you have allergies
- you use omega-3 / fish oil
On the day of the operation, hygienic washing is recommended.
Usually fasting is not required (unless the doctor has advised otherwise).
The doctor will explain all steps before the procedure and answer your questions.
What sensations may occur after the operation?
After the anesthesia wears off, you may experience:
- Moderate pain or tenderness
- Swelling and redness
- Minor bleeding during the first days
- Discomfort during erection during the healing period
These symptoms are normal and usually improve during healing.
What to do after the operation?
- Keep the area clean and dry.
- Follow the wound care instructions given by the doctor or nurse.
- Wear comfortable, supportive underwear.
- Avoid physical exertion and sports for about 2–3 weeks.
- Avoid sexual intercourse for about 4–6 weeks or according to the doctor’s recommendation.
Pain relief medication recommended by the doctor may be used if needed.
Healing
Initial healing usually occurs within 1–2 weeks. Full recovery takes about 4–6 weeks.
